Tongue Tied

Stay at home mom to three boys. Addicted to the interwebz. Should probably be cleaning my kitchen or folding laundry at this very moment, but I'm probably reading.
The 5th Wave - Rick Yancey "A shark who dreamed he was a man.If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would....so, so, good :)
Game. Set. Match. - Jennifer Iacopelli A couple of weeks ago I grumbled (internally and possibly to my husband) about how there seemed to be no stand alone books these days. Everything is a damned series of three or more installments. I feel that complaint biting me in the ass right now because I feel like this book should have been a series. This story is told in three point of views: Penny, Jasmine, and Indy. The book itself is only about 200 pages long. That's roughly 66 pages for each storyline (if you do the math, I didn't actually count how many pages each character got), and while the author was able to tell a great story within those pages I felt that she really only scratched the surface. For me, it felt as though Penny's story was the only plot that was told to completion. While Jasmine and Indy's (the two characters I wanted to learn more about) story left me a bit unfulfilled.I still enjoyed the book because I do enjoy a good sports story. The author did a great job conveying how much stress these young athletes go through. The description of the matches were explained in great detail so that even I, someone who knows nothing about tennis, was able to understand what was going on. It was the relationship between the characters (mostly the love interests) that I felt was a bit lacking.
Elite (Eagle Elite, #1) - Rachel Van Dyken I feel like I shouldn't enjoy this book as much as I did, but whatever - it was a fun, light, easy read and it kept me entertained. Many things in this book were far fetched, and I was able to overlook most of them: An exclusive private college (where politician's send their children) run by the mob? Sure, no problem. A twenty year old mob boss living on campus to run the college? Eh, whatever, I read books about vampires and werewolves, I can stretch my imagination. But the one thing I couldn't get over was how well Trace dealt with being told about her past, and her true identity. She mildly freaks out, but seems totally cool with it within a couple of pages. It reminded me of Twilight when Bella just completely accepts that Edward is a vampire. Here we have a totally fantastical story about vampires who sparkle in the sunlight and the one thing I can't get over is that minor detail, lol. Bella's all, "You're a vampire? Meh, you're hot, so it's cool."Despite all of the above, I still enjoyed the book. If you're able to suspend reality, and you enjoyed movies like Knight and Day or This Means War, then you'll like this book.
Rush Me - Allison Parr I'm kind of ambivalent about this book. There are some things I really didn't like, some things that I enjoyed, and some things that I was "meh" about, but I finished it in one day, so that has to mean something right?I have a really hard time rating books that I have mixed feelings about, lol.
Rogue Descendant - Jenna Black I'm tired of the cock blocking. TIRED!And now there's a possibility of a love triangle? Ugh.
Strength - Carrie Butler More like 3.5 but I decided to round up.
The Bet - Rachel Van Dyken Super cute. Super easy read. Laughed a lot....perfect beach book.
Knight & Play - Kitty French This was bordering on PWP, and it ended with a cliffhanger.Boo.
The Best Man - Kristan Higgins This book was adorable. It was funny (hilarious even...I laughed out loud on several occasions which hubby didn't appreciate considering I stayed up until 2 a.m. to read, lol). There was a bit of drama but it wasn't forced, and it didn't drag out for chapters on end.If you're looking for a light fluffy read, I'd definitely recommend this book.
Raid - Kristen Ashley There were parts of this book that had me rolling my eyes to the back of my head (in annoyance). Raiden is of the impression that women can't talk about football. Even if they love football, apparently, they don't know what the hell they're talking about.What.the fuck.ever.I may not know specific stats, but I know every starter on the 49ers and I can talk to any man, at length, about the season. Same with baseball.Raid may be an alpha male. He may give Hannah orders and be a bit of a prick sometimes....but that football statement really pissed me off. lol.I was also annoyed by Hannah's friend, KC, basically telling her that she had to put up with Raiden's alpha male shit bc "that's just who he is". If he's bossy, shut the hell up and take it. If he tells you what to do, say "okay" and just do what you were going to do anyway. He pushes you into a wall to get his point across? Dude...that shit is hot.Anyway. I enjoyed the book. I laughed out loud in a ton of places. There was drama. There was smut. Though I will admit that Raiden's chauvinistic tendencies pissed me off plenty.
Never Too Far - Abbi Glines Oh god, this one was more annoying than the first one! lol. The beginning wasn't so bad, in fact I was quite enjoying the story. However, by the third or fourth miscommunication fight and Blaire's fourth or fifth threat to leave, I just couldn't take it anymore.Blaire needs to grow some balls and speak her damn mind....seriously. I have no idea how these two are suppose to work out when neither of them are all that great at communicating. Were this a real couple that I was friends with, I would tell them to run...far away.
Undeniable - Madeline Sheehan Parts of this book made me extremely uncomfortable. Parts made me down right stabby. Now that I think about it, there's not much of this book that I particularly enjoyed, but I hate giving only one star.
Leave Me Breathless (Ross Siblings, #3) - Cherrie Lynn **I read this book without reading the two previous books and was not lost.**
Tempting the Player - J. Lynn, Jennifer L. Armentrout The ending kind of killed it for me...but whatevs.
Rule (Marked Men, #1) - Jay Crownover Remember when you could pick up a book at the book store and be guaranteed that the book would have gone through several edits. That each sentence would flow nicely. That spelling and grammar mistakes would be found and corrected. I feel like with the popularity of self publishing these small things are going by the wayside. And*, unfortunately it's these small things that can really take you out of a story. When you start paying more attention to all of the mistakes in a book, instead of paying attention to the characters and plot, that's a huge problem.(bolded emphasis mine)"...not that I remembered the girl's name or what she looked like or if had even been worth her time...." "Any chick that was willing to come how with a stranger...""I hope you had a good time last night and you can leave your number but we both the chances of me calling you are slim to none."All of these took place in the first chapter, within the first ten (or so) pages of the book. After the last error I decided I couldn't move on with the story. I was officially distracted. If there were at least three mistakes in the first ten pages, how many mistakes are to be found in the remaining 300?I didn't give any stars though because I didn't finish the book, but if grammatical errors are a pet peeve of yours I would stay away.*I know that you're not suppose to start a new paragraph with "and", but I'm a lowly goodreads reviewer so I think I get a little leeway ;)
Painted Faces - L.H. Cosway We're only two and a half months into 2013 and I've already read 14 books. I read over 150 books last year. I'm not telling you this to pat myself on the back. I'm just letting you know that I read....a lot.Unfortunately there's a downside to reading so much, and that downside is that books start to blend together. I often have friends who say, "So I read that book you recommended....", and even after getting a basic synopsis of the plot I still won't have any idea to which book they are referring. All of this to say that I won't be having that problem with Painted Faces. While the bare bones plot isn't necessarily new (and what plot is an original these days), the backdrop for the story is like nothing I've read before.I mean...straight hot boy drag queen? Yes please (never thought I'd hear myself say those words, lol). Plus, Fred (short for Freda, the female lead) is just all kinds of awesome.I also really loved the quote at the beginning of the book:For all of the men who are women and the women who are men, the men who are men and the women who are women. And those of you who are a little bit of both. You colour my world. Not everything in life is black and white, most things come in shades of grey....or pink, or orange, or turquoise. I think the author did a great job at illustrating that sentiment in this book. I have no doubt that Painted Faces will push people out of their comfort zones just a bit. And hey, we all need a little push every now and then.
